Ain't that loverly?

You know the times when nostalgia grips you and threatens to throttle you and you end up replaying the "those were the good old days" record? You don't? then you are too young...you must be old enough to get a nostalgia attack...like me...

you do? good...let's get started. So i had an attack of the good old movies syndrome and i reminsced about the good old movies that we used to watch. The days of "Gods must be crazy", shammi kapoor's twists and the musicals, Sound of music and "My fair lady'...

so coming back to the movie, a well meaning friend had presented my boys with this dvd and the not-so-well meaning boy had pushed it way out of sight. The other day when i was digging into their dvd pile, i found Sound of Music buried under the harry potter, jurassic park, King Kong and chocolate factory movies.

So there it was, unopened and ignored. Memories of childhood came surging through...I mean, who has not heard "Do re mi' and sung "these are a few of my fav things' in school. My kids have been taught this in school as well. So I invited the boys to watch it with me...after all this was an experience to be cherished right?

After 5 minutes: the 11 yr-old said.."can i read a book? If you want i'll read it here (BIG favor!!!!) one wicket down...

the soon-to-be 6 yrold decided to give me a chance...

After Song #1 the boy asked me if Mr. superhero makes his apeearance now...

Song #2 passed by with him demanding some magic at least...

A still beaming (and gritting my teeth on the inside) me explained why maria now has to go work for a captain with 7 children...and the third song started...where she is singing on her way to the captain's house...it does have songs...its a musical!!!

2 lines into the song, the little voice puts in his two dollars worth " you know, i think she should stop singing and go , she's going to get late if she's always singing"

a smirk from the hubby completed the experience...

for the record i still watched it, songs and all...and the l'il one gave me comnpay, never mind if he fell asleep 20 minutes into the movie...

bah! What do these kids know about movies, other than special effects and spandex clad superheroes...!!and so much for my instilling some movie sense into them...hmpppf!! they want magic? i plan to unleash Mary Poppins on them ...

i need solidarity here...does anyone else like these movies?

and on a funny note...someone sent this to me...allegedly sung by Julie Andrews on her 69th birthday..i use the word allegedly, 'cos i cannot find any concrete evidence of her singing this..neverthless its funny...

Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak,
When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,

And then I don’t feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinnin’,
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin’,
And we won’t mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache,
When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I’ve had,
And then I don’t feel so bad.

ta-da!!!Now go sing "The rain in spain"

I wonder if this is a boy and girl thing, but both of my daughters absolutely love this movie - we must have watched it hundereds of times. I remember when Meghana was 7 and Do Re Me was picked as her recital ballet song and she was ecstatic. we all still love this movie :) It was on TV here two weeks ago and we watched it again.

Also, the song that Julie Andrews allegedly sung is hilarious - I should save it to sing at my 69th birthday :)

Another one of my all time favorite is you've got mail and also sleepless in seattle (though not old classics, but still pretty good :))

These boys will never EVER know the value of such beautiful movies. And I think like PinkDogwood says, it must be a girl boy thing. They must have watched the transformers a million times while I can't understand what the fuss is all about...

And yes!!! I love watching all those movies you mentioned. They are such lovely stressbusters and feel good factors.

God must be crazy... yes I loved it.

I have to see the others....

Cheers :-)

Yes those were beautiful times..but then the reality is,every generation has been telling the same:: those days life used to be simple & beautiful ::
Thats life I guess !!
Nice post triggering nostalgia, especially when the joints have started creaking etc etc ,for me !!

:) no i wont go by the boy girl thing. as youd said there was this initial trouble getting them into the groove, but once they caught on they loved it too, my two boys. Ofcourse not as much i do. Its such a lovely dear movie, ve watched it all over so many times, so many favourite scenes.

The same desperation and desolation sets in me, when i see that they dont enjoy and relish reading, as much as i do. Absolutely awed by your read list, and was great to know people do love classics! :) (too long a comment i wud think, cudnt help it!!)

I am a bloke (at least I was last time I looked) and I have always loved TSOM, infact I saw it 7 times in 7 weeks when it first came out all those years ago.

Recently I saw the stage production in Londons West End and the magic came flooding back.

As for the modified song, I also heard a report of Ms Andrews singing this or something similar at her birthday bash, so there probably is something in it!

how do you solve the problem of.....? :)

Preethi said...

haha.. that was hilarious.. esp the song which Julie Andres is supposed to have sung!!
As for your sons.. mine does this too.. I subjected him to Sound of Music when he was 3 and he refused to watch it with me.. even when I had lulled him to sleep to the tunes of do re mi and my fav things all his life!
Mary Poppins had a worse reception.. at least he listened to the songs in SOM.. I know My Fair Lady wont stand a chance! Yeah these kids do like the spandex clad super heros in all their jatti-on-the-outside glamor!!

rayshma said...

'gods must be crazy'... damn those were a good movie series.
What about the "carry on" series? They were funny too.

Sound of music....noooooo. That thing deserves to die. Mom says i saw it over and over as a kid. I watched it few years ago again. No. Seriously, what was I thinking. I have never had the urge to throw my laptop in a grinder ever before in my life.

Give me chitty chitty bang bang. Give me Mary poppins.
Give me Guns of Navarone..well thats not a kid movie but still fun.

Anything but sound of music.
You started with the wrong movie. Sound of music is not what kids want to see after they have been influenced by the modern world.

Give chitty chitty bang bang a chance.
Maybe cartoon movies...Not the standard disney "aladdin, lady and the tramp" types...the ones not many people have heard of, sadly.

The last unicorn was one of my favorites. Sword in the stone is a good one. The cauldron...I have to see that one again. Didn't make sense to me as a kid. Couldn't follow the story at all.
Hey, atleast its a refreshing change from that pokemon nonsense, a ferret that shoots lightning out of his butt...yeaaa right.

if you are reading this...get to my blog ..again...there is a new post. And I want everyone possible to leave one idea behind. Go go quick. Time is of the essence.
We have to beat the clock here.
I assign everyone deputy designers badges. Come help.

I got to go now, have to get ready to visit the friend I am talking about in the post.

And Sound of music is still a very annoying movie. Too shrill. Maybe 3-4 year olds will like. But then again, they are amused with rocks..soooo...

I can watch The Sound of Music any number of times still...and I love My Fair Lady too... though they are very different movies, don't you think? And my daughter loved The Sound of Music...both the movie and the songs...she loves the little girl who sleeps off at the end of 'So long..farewell' ....and she loves the puppet show...

when we were young (yeah i am old!) we thought when we have kids we will be really cool and there will be no generation gap!

and our kids just said Hrrmmppff and Pbbbfffttt!! :p

i love sound of music and more than that My Fair Lady!! and someday they might just appreciate!

what life without a l'il hope, anyway?!

and maybe the magic in Mary Poppins might just enchant them?!

and Usha had done the post on parody of fav things and apprently Julie Andrews has never even heard of the song forget singing about it!

its just become some kinda urban legend!

great post!

cheers!

Ohh Suma! I so want ALL children to enjoy these absolutely brilliant classics that I actually play them even when the neighbors', friends' children visit. In fact what a co-incidence that I played Mary Poppins today when a neighbors' 7 year old girl was over and I started it from the scene when she enters the kids' room. Her twin brother joined shortly after and delightfully surprisingly they stayed till almost the end (and yeah they too are into transformers and all those things). So may be in future movies, choose a strategic starting point in the hope of at least catching their attention.

@ Abha : LOL at we thought when we have kids we will be cool and there will be no generation gap. I thought so too :)

Oh my god the Do Re Mi is such a hit. I see my younger one does not react to all that the elder one does. The dark knight is for them. I loved the 2$ worth statement, how can anybody keep singing mommy??? He is ultimate.
